FLAG DESCRIPTION / HISTORY
The Christopher Columbus flag of 1492 is a replica of a white standard containing the green initials F (Fernando) and Y (Ysabel) with a green maltese cross between the initials and golden crowns above them. The initials represent King Ferdinand and Queen Elizabeth. It is one of the flags or banners described in Columbus' journal that were carried on the inital explorations of 1492. The banner is considered to be the naval ensign of the three ships in the expedition and was likely carried in a vertical banner style, possibly with a swallow-tail bottom. One of the other banners was the Royal banner of Castile and Leon (Lions and Castles).
