FLAG DESCRIPTIONS / HISTORY
Fleur de Lis Flags in the Americas
Though the fleur de lis symbol use as an arms dates from the 1300's, and the three fleur de lis royal banner dating from King Charles V in 1365, there was no national flag for France prior to the French Revolution. Various royal flags were used.

Royal Banner of France (1534 to 1763) Three gold fleur-de-lis on a dark blue field, arranged two above, one centered below was the the most commonly used flag in New France (French Canada). French military flags, including the plain white banner of the royal navy were also flown.

Bourbon Banner: a plain white flag, a white flag with three gold fleurs-de-lis, or a white flag with many fleurs-de-lis, or a white flag with many fleurs-de-lis and the arms of France in the center. All of these flags were used for naval purposes and on land for the military and forts. It is believed that the plain white flag of France flew over most French forts and settlements in America.

French Fleur-De-Lis (Fleur 23): This flag and the same pattern with the coat of arms of France in the center are associated with ceremonial occasions 1590-1790, and again under the restoration of the Kingdom of France from 1814-1830. There was no specified number of fleurs-de-lis for these flags.
